TAI CHI SAFETY QUESTIONS
Is Tai Chi SAFE for Seniors and Beginners?
The primary lesson and goal of Tai Chi is to RELAX!! We learn about our bodies and how to turn off our tense muscles and reclaim our balance and posture. At Tai Chi River, we prioritize safety and low impact movement. We talk often about 'staying within YOUR personal range of motion' and 'not overdoing it'. We believe...No Pain, Gain! We encourage all practitioners to move very slowly and carefully with mindfulness. Practiced correctly, Tai Chi should never hurt, it should never overextend, and it should never twist. yet somehow these slow rhythmic motions bring great health and mental well-being.
Should I talk to my Doctor about starting Tai Chi?
Tai Chi River is designed to be relaxing, low-impact, and accessible by everyone. Professor Cheng said "come to Tai Chi as you are" so everyone can join our community and practice within personal capabilities. In fact, most lesson can be done seated in a chair or even laying down while recovering from illnesses and injuries. Depending on your current physical condition, we recommend that you ask your doctor to be safe and confident. However, many of our students have come to Tai Chi River explicitly because their doctors recommended that they find and do Tai Chi.
What do I need to get started with Tai Chi?
The Tai Chi Classics say "to practice all you need is 5 square feet and 10 minutes." This is totally True!!! Wear some comfortable clothes and shoes and stand up about 8 feet in front of your screen. Now you are ready for Tai Chi. No changing, no special clothes or equipment...no sweating and no commute from your living room. Tai Chi River has provided free videos about practicing safely and developing better posture. We recommend getting started with one or two of these introductory videos, however many people also just jump into the deep end of the Tai Chi River and get started with Basic Principles Class and Yang 37 Form Classes. Really...That's it!! Click play. Stand up. Move and feel BETTER!!!
What to expect during and after Tai Chi practice?
Tai Chi is unlike anything you have ever done before. You will start to feel physically different (Usually BETTER) within 15 minutes. The deep breathing and the focus on relaxation will open up the respiratory system, soften the muscles, and increase the blood flow throughout your body. You may begin to feel warm and calm...and HAPPIER! You may sleep much better that evening. Surprisingly Tai Chi is a significant 'workout'. Especially beginners and seniors may feel weak in the legs like after a long walk. but keep showing up and day by day, those legs will become strong and solid like the Mountain...
